Wellness Holiday Gift Guide

say jess please holiday guide

Welcome to my Holiday Wellness Gift Guide!

It’s finally that time of year! The spirit of the holiday’s is contagious and now that Thanksgiving is behind us and it’s the weekend of deals… IT IS TIME TO SHOP. I’ve curated some fun & easy gifts (both large and small) for the wellness savvy friend or family member in your life. Take a look below for some fun ideas – all of which, i’ve tried and tested and officially “Say Jess” approve!

stocking stuffers

Stocking Stuffers

Essential Oils // My favorite scent is eucalyptus – I diffuse it every night! This is a great starter back if you’re new to essential oils. Vitruvi is reasonably priced and I love the quality & potency of these oils.

Dry Brush // I like to use this brush with sesame oil on my skin in the winter or coconut oil on my skin in the summer. It’s great for exfoliating dry skin during the winter months & keep your immune system up by working out your lymphatic drainage. Check out my full post on the benefits and the how-to of dry brushing.

Clay Face Mask // OBsesssed with this clay mask. I mix is 50-50 with apple cider vinegar and it makes my face feel so tight and refreshed. You can put it on your arm pits too! It helps to detox your clogged pores.

anthropologie candle

Anthro Candles // Everyone loves a good Voluspa from Anthropologie. You can’t go wrong with this versatile gift. My two favorite scents for the winter are Winter White & the big triple wick Balsam Forest Gold Foil candle.

Five Minute Journal // Serve up some gratitude this holiday season with The Five Minute Journal. I use this baby every morning to practice 5 minutes of gratitude and it’s really helped me kick things off on the right foot.

Gifts Under $50

White Noise Maker // I live in the city so a little white noise helps me fall asleep at night. It sure can’t cancel the sounds of sirens but it does help to kind of drowned out all the noi se in between.

Blackout shades //CRITICAL to my bedroom. It changed the game all together for my sleep quality. Everything I read about sleep quality calls for pitch black in the bedroom. Here’s a quick & cheap fix! It’s also easy to customize.

silicone-turner-with-copper-handle-c

William Sonoma Gold & White Utensils// I recently bought these at William Sonoma and i’m totally obsessed. They look beautiful in the kitchen and they’re nice and sturdy to work with.

Hydroflask with Straw// I carry this watter bottle around EVERY WHERE I GO. The white is nice and subtle. Also, the straw lid is essential. It’s so much better than the wide brim regular lid because it eliminates spillage and is a lot easier to drink out of. The bottle carries hot or cold water.

Splurgey $$ but Worth It

Vitamix // Probably my most used appliance in the kitchen. There is little the vitamix can’t handle.

Le Creuset Cookwear // Pots, pan, skillet… it really doesn’t matter because Le Cruiset makes the best in the business when it comes to cook wear. They last forever & you won’t risk the non-stick teflon rubbing off onto your food.

Dyson Air Purifier // This is actually the only item on the list that I don’t have but i’m adding it to the list because I realllllly want it. It gets stellar reviews and it’s so important to keeping a clean household, especially if you have allergies or pets.

Breville Coffee Maker // It goes without saying that I use this baby everyday. It’s got a huge water tank and a place to add the fresh beans that i’ll grind as it prepares your coffee. I love this because I don’t have to add water to it everyday and it the best coffee.

Breville Milk Frother // I recently purchased this baby from Williams Sonoma and I LOVE IT. I use it for matcha lattes, cappuccinos, hot chocolate, anything you want to warm and froth milk for.

Breville Tea Kettle // I like this glass tea kettle because the old water heater I used was plastic and it made me a little bit uncomfortable that I kept heating water to that temp inside plastic. I went with my trusted Breville brand and love the sleek look of the glass tea kettle.

Foot Massager // My evening routine is; walk in, drop bags, sit down, massage feet. No explanation needed except that this leaves your feet feeling light as a feather after a long day.

Gravity Blanket // This blanket is ahhhh.maze.ing. If you’re not sure what to get your special someone, it’s a safe bet that they’ll love this gift. You should get the blanket about 10% of your body weight. It helps with anxiety and promotes deep relaxation. It’s one of my absolute favorites. They’re having a 30% sale this weekend woo.

White diffuser

Essential Oil Diffuser // These can be pricey but you only need one… well, ever. Unless you’re trying to put these in more than one room, in which case, power to you! They come in so many sleek and beautiful designs so select one that’s right for your decor.

Books/Cookbooks

How to Be Well – Dr Frank Lipman// an easy step-by-step guide to all of the most current health trends and the essentials of what it means to be well and live a well rounded healthy lifestyle

Own the Day, Own your Life – Aubrey Marcus // this book focuses on human optimization and how to reach new limits for yourself in all fascets of work, life, sleep, sex, training, playing, and eating.

Body Love Cookbook –  Kelly Leveque // I love Kelly’s approach to health and wellness. She preaches balance and coming from a place of abundance. Her recipes are also fire & manageable to make!

Nutrition Stripped Cookbook – McKell Hill // McKell is the ULTIMATE when it comes to health & wellness in my book. She has an amazing blog supported by science and fact based research and her cookbook is no different. It’s plant-based so I like to cook from it to find ways to incorporate more veggies into my diet.

True Roots Cookbook – Kristin Cavallari // Her recipes are FIRE and they’re dairy-free, gluten free, and refined sugar free. When you make her recipes you most certainly do not feel like your dieting – they’re packed with flavor and cover a lot of bases from nut mylk to granola to soba bowls. One of my favorites.

A Return to Love – Marianne Williamson // just read it. It is food for the soul. It’s been a best selling book for years and it’s one you can read over and over again!

Shop Local

Brushed By Dina // buy your favorite person a clean organic spray tan for the holidays. It’s one of those gifts that may not be sexy to wrap but your special someone will LOVE this custom airbrush tan to the next special event they have coming up. Dina is a local business owner that will come to your home!

Steel Revolution // the other gift that feels SOOO good to get is a 10 class pack to your favorite workout studio. I LOVE Steel Revolution elite spin studio. It always cheers me up when I take class there and the music is blasting and I can whip my pony tail back and forth… but that’s just ME. Other studios I love in the area are [solidcore] and Pure Barre.

Lotus Soap Shop // Give the gift of clean beauty products to your special someone. The soaps and scrubs from Lotus are made with small batch, real, and nourishing ingredients. I love the coconut body butter. These are perfect stocking stuffers!

Inner Rutz // the list of what wellness goodies to get from Inner Rutz is ENDLESS. They’ve got great books (including A Return to Love), jewelry, crystals, yoga mats… literally EVERYTHING. Stop by their shop in Mt. Lebanon and check it out. They’ve also got great classes!

CSA Box // My friend Maura just told me about these… I haven’t ordered them yet but I can’t help but feel it would be a fabulous Christmas gift. Fresh, seasonal, & local ingredients from local PA farms delievered straight to your do. These ingredients are delivered every 2 weeks and they change week by week so you don’t get bored cooking the same food over and over again.

Manikure // Pittsburgh’s cutest nail salon! Located in the heart of Lawerencville, this salon is adorable inside and they do custom nail designs. I had my names done here for vacation and they lasted almost 3 weeks. Give the gift of a great mani for Christmas!

manikure

PHEWWWW! That’s a lot to take it. I hope that it was helpful & I hope I can help you guys find the perfect gift for your special someone in your life! I would love to hear about some other great gifts this year that my readers have found so comment below and let me know!

Vitamin C Shock Therapy 🍊 By popular demand I Vitamin C Shock Therapy 🍊

By popular demand I’m making this concoction a permanent fixture on my feed. Save it for when you or anyone in your family starts to get sick and adjust the dosage based on age (per the @medicalmedium guidelines). I even take this when I’m starting to get a cold sore to kill the virus and I swear by it!

For @medicalmedium Vitamin C Shock Therapy for adults, the ingredients are:
• 2 500-milligram capsules of @vimergy Micro-C
• 1 cup of water (preferably warm)
• 2 teaspoons of raw honey
• freshly squeezed juice from one orange.

Here’s how to prepare it:
Open the Micro-C capsules and pour their powder into the warm water. Stir (I use a frother) until dissolved. Add the raw honey and orange juice and stir well.

Starting at the first sign of cold, flu, or viral infection, drink this tonic every two hours during waking hours. You can do this for two days and then switch to the dosage in an individual supplement list, or you can use this technique throughout the duration of a cold or flu.

For children, here are the adjusted amounts of vitamin C for this supplement therapy (from the medical medium book):

• Ages 1 to 2: 1 500-milligram capsule
Micro-C emptied and mixed with 1/2 cup water, 1 teaspoon raw honey, and the freshly squeezed juice from half an orange, every six hours during waking hours
• Ages 3 to 4: 1 500-milligram capsule
Micro-C emptied and mixed with 1/2 cup water, 1 teaspoon raw honey, and the freshly squeezed juice from 1 orange, every five hours during waking hours
• Ages 5 to 8: 1 500-milligram capsule
Micro-C emptied and mixed with 1
cup water, 2 teaspoons raw honey, and the freshly squeezed juice from 1 orange, every four hours during waking hours
• Ages 9 to 12: 1 500-milligram capsule Micro-C emptied and mixed with 1 cup water, 2 teaspoons raw honey, and the freshly squeezed juice from 1 orange, every two hours during waking hours
• Ages 13 and up: 2 500-milligram capsules Micro-C emptied and mixed with 1 cup water, 2 teaspoons raw honey, and the freshly squeezed juice from 1 orange, every three hours during waking hours

EGGPLANT 🍆 MOUSSAKA This dairy free/gluten fre EGGPLANT 🍆 MOUSSAKA

This dairy free/gluten free dinner dish tastes anything but. It is packed with rich flavor and is always a special treat in our house. It’s been on my heavy rotation for some time now.

INGREDIENTS:
Veggie Layers:
- 3 TBSP avocado oil, plus more for the pan
- 1 small sweet potato
- 2 medium eggplants, cut lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick slices

Meat Sauce:
- 2 TBSP avocado oil
-1 large white onion, minced
- 1 fresno Chile, seeded and minced (I often make it without this and it’s still delicious)
- 4 large garlic cloves, minced
- 2 pound ground lamb
- 1 TBSP smoked paprika
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground cinnamin
- 1 TBSP pink Himalayan salt
- 1 TBSP freshly ground black pepper
- 6 TBSP tomato paste
- 1 tomato, seeded and chopped
- 2 TBSP tightly packed chopped fresh mint

Creamy Bechamel Sauce:
- 2 TBSP ghee
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1 (15-oz) can full-fat unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 1/2 tsp teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
- 2 large egg yolks

DIRECTION:
1. Preheat oven to 425F. Cover the eggplant with the avocado oil. Place the eggplant slices on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until tender and browned. Remove the eggplant and set aside. Reduce the heat of the oven to 400F.

2. Meanwhile, prepare the sweet potato by cutting it into 1/4 inch thick rounds and set aside.

3. Meat sauce: heat the avocado oil in a large pot over medium high heat. Add the onion and sauté 5-10 mins. Add the chile and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the lamb, smoked paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and pepper and cook until the meat is fully cooked. Add the tomato paste and chopped tomato and cook until all the liquid has evaporated. Add the mint and oregano, stir for 2 minutes, then remove from heat.

4. Béchamel: In a saucepan, melt the ghee over medium heat. Add the almond flour and whisk constantly until fully combined. Whisk in the coconut milk and bring to a boil. Add the nutmeg and black pepper and cook, stirring for about 5 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the egg yolks, one by one.

It's me, JESS. It may look like my content has ch It's me, JESS.

It may look like my content has changed in the last year if you've followed along for a while, but it remains authentic to my wellness journey.

When I first embarked on my wellness journey, I think I was in middle school. At that time, being "well" meant being skinny.

But we evolve.

Today, that couldn't be further from the truth. Today, it's living out something BIGGER than myself, not making myself smaller.

It's finding peace in my circumstance. It's treating myself with respect.
It's listening and learning from other people.
It's nurturing and embracing my family, fostering community.
It's not turning my back on people that make me feel uncomfortable.
It's diving deeper into my faith.
It's therapy; getting to know myself on a deeper level.

So, if it looks like i've changed... you're right! Proud change agent over here. Whatever could be next :)
