What’s the deal with blue light glasses? Are they just a hoax so that us with 20-20 vision *who have ALWAYS wanted glasses* can have a real excuse to wear them??
Admittedly, that’s how this experiment began for me. I wanted some cute business professional specs but always felt a little silly knowing they served no purpose aside from me feeling a little smarter, a little more focused.
I heard a buzz about the concept of blue light glasses and was on it like white on rice. Initial feeling: this is the excuse i’ve been WAITING FOR. More rational feeling: why do my eyes need protection from blue light? I’m looking at screens all. day. long… from my phone to my computer to my T.V., I mean, when aren’t we looking at a blue light? So, I dug in and did some research.
It seems i’m not alone in this feeling because I polled my instagram followers yesterday and 79% of you voted that you NEED these (only 21% feeling like it’s a scam, 2 of which are my mom & brother so those haters don’t count into these stats).
Here is what I found:
What Do Blue Light Glasses Do?
Blue light glasses filter out the blue light projected from our devices, the light that promotes wakefulness and attention. Blue light isn’t inherently bad for us, it’s even in sunlight. Where our problem lies is that humans are taking in blue light at all times of day – as soon as we wake up, all day long, and right before we close our eyes to go to bed. Too much exposure to blue light at night suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep cycles.
Have your eyes ever felt fatigued after peering at your screen for hours on end? You’re not alone: according to The Vision Council, 200 million Americans report symptoms of digital eye strain (DES), eye discomfort which can be caused from looking at a screen for more than two hours at a time. Blue light glasses have been shown to subtle eye strain from excessive screen time.
Blue Light Glasses have become more and more mainstream as scientists continue to explore the impact on excessive and constant blue light exposure to our eyes. The glasses help up keep sleep cycles regulated (be sure to wear these at night at the very least!) and protect us from eye strain.
OH! AND HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS!
Blue Light Glasses Don’t Have to Be Ugly!
If you’ve been following this trend for a long time, you know that blue light filtering glasses have traditionally been large and adorned with a deep mustardy yellow hew – UGly.
The good news is that as the research progresses on this topic and the glasses become more mainstream, companies are coming out with some fashionable options.
I got a few questions on where I found mine – I love these! They’re available to purchase on Amazon for just $20 (I’ve also added these to my products page)
Amazon has a huge selection of options so click that link about and explore similar products to find a frame that works for you.
Hope this was informative!
