CBD Oil: Everything You Need to Know

CBD OIL

Known for it’s mood boosting effects, CBD oil in a hot health trend of 2018.

I’ve been curious about the stuff for some time so when I saw that my local Huron, Ohio coffee shop was hosting a pop up shop in collaboration with Green Roads CBD, I had to stop by and learn more! I just happened to be there for the 4th of July week that the pop-up was occurring… Boy, did I get lucky! We LOADED up on product and tried some free samples too. I learned so much and heard amazing healing stories about the product, so I had to give it a try. Once bit by the CBD bug, I did some research. Here’s what I found:

What Is CBD Oil, exactly?

CBD Oil stands for Cannabidiol. It is a compound found in the cannabis plant that contains many medicinal + therapeutic benefits for people and animals. CBD is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids in cannabis, and it’s been well-documented to possess anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anti-anxiety effects. Because CBD is non-psychoactive, it won’t make you high.

3 Key Components:

  1. No THC – THC (the psychoactive) and CBD are two different compounds. This is why CBD alone doesn’t get you high. In fact, in the cannabis plant, there are at least 113 active cannabinoids, of these, THC is the ONLY psychoactive.
  2. Naturally Occurring – Humans & animals alike evolved with cannabis in our systems. Our endocannabinoid receptors developed overtime, meaning our bodies naturally know how to receive, produce, and store CBD.
  3. Medicinal – CBD has been seen to treat symptoms including; cancer, autism, epilepsy, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and more (treatment is continued to be explored). Not to mention, it’s a natural mood booster!

How CBD Works in our Body:

CBD stimulates the body’s natural cannabinoids which sends signals to activate those receptors to do their job naturally. CB1 receptors are in the nervous system, glands, organs and connective tissue. CB2 receptors have an effect on the immune system and your functioning health. The natural cannabinoids within your body work with these receptors to prevent your nervous system from misfiring or acting defectively.

Cannabinoids work on the endocannabinoid system in our brain system. The endocannabinoid system controls a lot of of our bodies functions: sleep, our mood, immunity, reproduction, pleasure, pain, and memory.

While THC can alter the normal state we should be in, CBD can help correct homeostasis on a need be basis by helping the body to naturally produce its own endocannabinoids that are responsible for regulating our bodies.

BENEFITS OF CBD OIL

Proven Benefits of CBD

  • Relieves Anxiety: As noted earlier, it’s a mood booster! Why? Studies have shown CBD may boost signaling through serotonin receptors in our brain. An animal study using mice found repeated administration of CBD helped the hippocampus (a huge area in our brain) regenerate neurons, which could be useful for treating anxiety or depression.
  • Neuroprotective (a fancy word for protects the brain): CBD has a high level of antioxidants that are essential to protect our body from our toxic environment (think toxic beauty products, unfiltered water, toxic cleaning products.. and that’s just INSIDE). Antioxidants are able to neutralize these damaging oxidizing agents from the bloodstream to improve the health of cells and reduce the risk of developing a diseases like cardiovascular disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis. As a neuroprotectant, CBD helps reduce damage to the brain and nervous system and encourages the growth and development of new neurons. Oxidative stress caused by ischemia, traumatic
blows, or autoimmune and genetic disorders can cause temporary or permanent neural damage, but studies have shown that CBD is able to protect against this damage and improve recovery. CBD’s neuroprotective properties are also potentially beneficial in helping prevent and limit the progression of neurological disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Reduced Risk of Artery Blockage: A 2013 study found that isolated CBD acted as a potent vasorelaxant. Vasorelaxation is the reduction in tension of the walls of the blood vessels, or a decrease of vascular pressure.
  • Anti-Inflammatory: On one test on rats, scientists removed all the naturally occurring CBD from the animals and founds noticeable inflammation on the tags on their ears – a symptom never before see in these animals in a normal or placebo effect. So, if our bodies had NO CBD, we’re be constantly inflamed at every point that our body is touch or irritated by a foreign object (shoes on our feet, pants on our waste, bra, ear piercings, you name it). Our body counts on the anti-inflammatory nature of CBD produced naturally and with added, high-quality CBD, we see even more dramatic health improvements of a reduction in inflammation from disease & immune system to brain fog to joint health, you name it.
  • Promotes Bone Growth: In patients with fractured or broken bones, administered CBD helped to strengthen fracture callus; the cartilage which mends the bone fracture. CBD  protects against age-related bone loss by regulating bone cells.
  • Relieves Pain: Researchers think that CBD interacts with receptors in your brain and immune system – this creates anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects that help with pain management.

CBD vs. Hemp Seed Oil

CBD oil from hemp is different from hemp seed oil, which is mainly used for cooking, so don’t be fooled into thinking you’re buying CBD when the label says hemp seed oil. When shopping for CBD, you want to look for an organic, full-spectrum oil from hemp. Unlike other CBD oils out there organic, full-spectrum varieties contain phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, flavonoids and antioxidants from the whole hemp plant that work together to enhance the effects of CBD. This is what’s known as the “entourage effect.” – Nutrition Stripped

Products I’ve Tried

Coffee – Green Roads has been highly recognized for their CBD Oil Coffee. I’m into it… although over the last few days, I can’t say I notice a huge difference. This product is CBD Infused Coffee grounds and 100% Industrial Organic Hemp. It’s touted as an alternative to fend away the jitters and increased anxiety as a result of coffee. I’ll report back on this one over time. This seems like a really easy way to get a regular dose of CBD for those struggling with any of the symptoms noted above.

Camomile Tea – this made me fall asleep at 8:30pm and sleep like a baby ALL NIGHT LONG. The taste is amazing, as well. If you’re a tea drinker and struggle with sleep, I HIGHLY recommend.

Daily Dose Sticks – these made me HAPPY. I had a free sample & I think I may be back for more.

For the parents that are looking for the words to For the parents that are looking for the words to talk about how kids play, walk, or think differently this school year, thank you for leaning in.

If you’ve hung around here long enough you know we want the world to be a part of our journey with us because we do believe that most people are well-meaning.

Let me help you find the words from my little corner of the world that I understand intimately.

Please remember how much courage it takes for some kids to walk in that door on the first day of school and take the time to make sure this isn’t something that your kids turn away from but embrace, because everyone has moments of vulnerability… some just wear it on the outside!

GF SUPER HERO WAFFLES 🧇 Every once in a while GF SUPER HERO WAFFLES 🧇

Every once in a while a new hit recipe comes across our table and I just have to share. These waffles are packed with goodness and actually taste fantastic & have a nice fluffy texture. Next time your kids ask for waffles, you can feel good about serving these up.

Also — I’m loving summer but these cooler mornings have me unapologetic about cooking up some pumpkin in the morning… it’s coming! 🎃

INGREDIENTS:
• 3/4 cup natural almond butter
• 1 medium very ripe banana
• 1 big dollop maple syrup (up to 1/4 c if your kids like um sweet)
• 3 large eggs
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 cup loosely packed spinach
• 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
• 2 tablespoons chia seeds
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• oil for greasing

Instructions:
Heat up waffle iron and brush a little oil on both the top and bottom griddle.

Combine all remaining ingredients in your blender. Run until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the food processor if needed and run to ensure that all ingredients are incorporated.

Pour about 1/4-1/3 cup of batter onto the griddle, just enough to make a pool in the middle of the griddle. I find that if you over fill the waffle maker, the waffles will not cook through or will require more cook time.

Close waffle iron for about 2-4 minutes (depending on how hot your waffle iron cooks). You will know your waffle is done when steam stops coming out of your waffle iron and the waffle looks golden brown on the outside.

Waffles may be a bit soft when fresh out of the waffle iron, but should hold together. They will crisp up after a minute or two.

There’s one time every year where we are brought There’s one time every year where we are brought to our knees again and pray that all the love we pour into our little lady is enough to give us a clear report. So glad to report all scans look great 😊.

The yearly check-in also comes with some reflection on things I wish I could have known 4 years ago when we were looking at a scary anatomy scan we knew nothing about. So, if that’s you I hope this finds you like other mother’s posts found me.

1. The medical stuff is hard but loving her is the easiest thing you will ever do.

2. It’s her timing, not yours. Things have always come “late” to Harper but in her time she has shown us what she’s capable of. Never count her out and always remind her how capable she is.

3. Over time those doctors that you found to be overwhelming become a safe place to you. But that’s only if you do not settle for mediocre care and advocate for the best. @gregorygheuer @matthewdobbsmd

4. If you don’t have the answer for something there is a mom out there somewhere that has figured out a work around. The moms are insanely impressive.

5. Your joy in life is not driven by your set of circumstances - it’s driven by your decision, your perspective, and your faith. Don’t forget that choice is always yours and your child is watching.

• 1 cup cooked and cooled green lentils, about 1/3 cup dry. See above for cooking suggestions
• 2 large eggs
• 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
• 1/3 cup maple syrup or honey
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
• 1 1/4 cups oat flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 2 teaspoons pumpkin spice
• 1/4 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat your oven to 350℉ and line a 12-hole muffin tin with liners. Set aside.

In your blender, combine pumpkin puree, cooked lentils, eggs, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla, and apple cider vinegar. Blend until mixture is smooth and set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and pumpkin spice. Mix.

Pour the contents of the blender into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combine. DO NOT over mix. Over mixing can lead to dense, flat muffins.

Let cool in pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. Enjoy and let cool completely before storing any leftovers in an air-tight container in fridge or freezer.

10/22 ✨ Diagnosis Day The day that marked life 10/22 ✨ Diagnosis Day

The day that marked life before this day and after. A terrifying day full of such uncertainty. A day I reached for my phone and found my now friend @mrstristinapon little girl Bryn and saw how full of life she was!

Now it’s a day I’m learning to celebrate for the absolute unique shine my girl has and gosh am I proud of her & love the life we’ve built!

Now 10/22 is a day I can share our joy in hopes a newly diagnosed family needs to see that big joy can exist among the challenges that come with a Spina Bifida diagnosis. God has a plan greater than any of us can possibly know.

5 years feels really big ❤️ The past five yea 5 years feels really big ❤️

The past five years have been full of *life* — foremost, full of blessings greater than I could have ever imagined. God has moved in us in ways we didn’t know were possible.

Interwoven Himself in our relationship and who we’ve become as people, even when we were sure he wasn’t working.

We became a family once and then again.

The past 5 years have been full of life altering challenges too. The kind that change you forever - more than one of them.

Thinking back to what has survived these 5 years — it’s abounding LOVE, peace, romance, and trust.

To 50 more, my hubby (who will never see this). ❤️

Don’t worry - it’ll be 5 more years until you get another sappy post from me.
